Gunfire hits Spirit Airlines flight arriving in Port-au-Prince; plane lands in Dominican Republic
Passengers on a Spirit Airlines flight arriving in Port-au-Prince narrowly escaped death when their plane was hit by gunfire as it landed at the city's airport on Sunday.
The plane, which was carrying 146 passengers and crew, was descending toward the Toussaint Louverture International Airport when it came under fire from unknown assailants.
The aircraft sustained damage to its fuselage and a wing, but fortunately, there were no reported injuries among the passengers or crew.
The plane was able to land safely at the airport in the neighboring Dominican Republic.
No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, but it comes amid a surge in violence in Haiti, which has been wracked by political and economic instability in recent months.
After landing in the Dominican Republic, the passengers were taken to a local hotel. They are expected to be flown back to Port-au-Prince on a later flight.
The U.S. Embassy in Haiti has issued a security alert urging U.S. citizens to avoid traveling to the country due to the ongoing violence.
The embassy also said that it is "closely monitoring the situation" and is "working with Haitian authorities to ensure the safety of U.S. citizens in Haiti."
Spirit Airlines has not yet released a statement on the incident.
This is a developing story. Stay tuned for more updates.
