A Spirit Airlines flight traveling from Fort Lauderdale, Florida to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, was diverted to the nearest airport after passengers reported hearing gunshots on board, with the plane landing safely at the alternate airport.
Investigation underway
According to a statement from Spirit Airlines, Flight 942 was diverted to Orlando International Airport (MCO) after reports of gunfire on Thursday evening. The plane landed safely in Orlando, where it was met by law enforcement officials.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating the incident and the airline is cooperating fully. The airline said it is working to re-accommodate passengers on another flight to Haiti.
Gunfire report under investigation
The FBI is investigating reports of gunfire on a Spirit Airlines flight from Fort Lauderdale to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, that forced the plane to be diverted to Orlando.
Passengers on the plane reported hearing gunshots and the pilot made the decision to land the plane in Orlando. No injuries were reported.
The FBI is working with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and Spirit Airlines to investigate the incident. The FBI said it is too early to speculate on the cause of the incident.
"The safety and security of our passengers and crew members is our top priority," Spirit Airlines said in a statement. "We are cooperating fully with the FBI and the TSA in their investigation."
