Gustavus Adolphus College Set to Join NCAA Division III in 2024
MIAC Announces Departure of Longtime Member
The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) has announced that Gustavus Adolphus College will be leaving the conference and joining NCAA Division III in 2024. The move comes after a unanimous vote by the MIAC Presidents' Council, and brings an end to Gustavus' 82-year membership in the conference.
New Challenges and Opportunities
Gustavus Adolphus College President Rebecca Bergman said that the decision to leave the MIAC was not made lightly, but was ultimately in the best interests of the college and its student-athletes. "This move will give our student-athletes the opportunity to compete at the highest level, and will provide them with a more challenging and rewarding experience," Bergman said.
Gustavus Adolphus College will begin the transition to NCAA Division III immediately, and will compete as an independent during the 2023-24 school year. The college will then become a full member of the Division III in 2024-25.
MIAC Reacts to Gustavus' Departure
The MIAC released a statement expressing its regret at Gustavus Adolphus College's decision to leave the conference. "We have enjoyed a long and successful relationship with Gustavus Adolphus College, and we wish them all the best in their future endeavors," the statement said. "We are confident that the MIAC will continue to be a strong and competitive conference, and we look forward to the future."
