Hawaii Men's Basketball Rolls Past Life Pacific in Season Opener
Dominant Performance Sets the Tone for the Season
The University of Hawaii men's basketball team kicked off their 2022-23 campaign with a resounding victory over NAIA opponent Life Pacific, showcasing their dominance on both ends of the court.
The Rainbow Warriors asserted their control from the opening tip, establishing a commanding 17-point halftime lead and never relinquishing it throughout the second half.
Key Players Step Up
Noel Coleman Leads the Charge
Sophomore guard Noel Coleman emerged as a key contributor, leading the team with 18 points in an efficient 6-of-11 shooting performance. His ability to create his own shot and knock down perimeter jumpers proved pivotal in Hawaii's offensive success.
Kamaka Hepa Shines in the Paint
Senior forward Kamaka Hepa provided a formidable presence in the paint, notching 16 points and grabbing 9 rebounds. His hustle and physicality allowed Hawaii to dominate the boards, outrebounding Life Pacific 45-25.
Balanced Attack and Stifling Defense
Hawaii's victory was a testament to their balanced attack, with four players scoring in double figures. Junior guard Justus Jackson contributed 15 points, while senior forward Bernardo da Silva added 11.
The Rainbow Warriors' defense also played a pivotal role in their triumph. They held Life Pacific to just 32% shooting from the field, forcing 17 turnovers and limiting the visiting team to only 23 rebounds.
Coach Kamalu's Perspective
"We're excited about the way we started the season," said Hawaii head coach Eran Ganot. "We played with great energy and focus, and we were able to control the game from start to finish."
Ganot emphasized the team's collective effort and the importance of their upcoming non-conference schedule in preparing for the rigors of conference play.
Looking Ahead
The Rainbow Warriors will have a quick turnaround as they host Chaminade University on Monday, November 14th. The Silverswords are coming off a season-opening victory over Hawaii Pacific University and will pose a different challenge to the Rainbow Warriors.
Hawaii will then embark on a three-game road trip, facing UC Irvine, Boise State, and Portland before returning home for their conference opener against Cal State Fullerton on December 29th.
