Ithaca Topples No. 11 William Smith in Thrilling Penalty Kick Shootout
Bombers Capture First League Title Since 2021
ITHACA, N.Y. - The Ithaca College women's soccer team captured the 2024 Liberty League Championship on Sunday afternoon, defeating No. 11 William Smith College 3-2 in a penalty kick shootout after a thrilling 1-1 draw through regulation and overtime.
The Bombers (14-3-3) had a chance to win it in the final seconds of regulation, but William Smith (16-2-2) goalkeeper Olivia Harris came up with a spectacular save to force overtime.
In the shootout, Ithaca converted all three of its attempts, while William Smith missed its second and fourth tries.
Junior midfielder Emma Harris (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) scored the game-winning goal for the Bombers, while sophomore goalkeeper Maddy Carter (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) made two saves in the shootout.
Carter also made a key save in the final minute of overtime to keep the game tied.
Ithaca's victory is its first Liberty League title since 2021, and it is the program's third overall title.
The Bombers earned the automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament with the win.
The NCAA Tournament field will be announced on Monday, November 13.
Ithaca is expected to be a high seed in the tournament after finishing the regular season ranked No. 5 in the United Soccer Coaches Division III poll.
The Bombers have won six of their last seven games and are unbeaten in their last 10.
William Smith, which was ranked No. 11 in the United Soccer Coaches Division III poll, saw its season end with the loss.
The Herons were making their third straight appearance in the Liberty League championship game.
