Miami Dolphins Will Trade Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa
The Miami Dolphins are finalizing a deal to trade quarterback Tua Tagovailoa to the New York Jets, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Monday.
Tagovailoa, the No. 5 overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft, has been the Dolphins' starting quarterback for the past three seasons. He has thrown for 6,014 yards, 41 touchdowns and 18 interceptions in 34 career starts.
The Dolphins are expected to receive multiple draft picks in return for Tagovailoa, who is entering the final year of his rookie contract. The exact compensation is still being worked out, but Miami is expected to get at least two high draft picks.
The Jets, who have been looking for a franchise quarterback for several years, are expected to make Tagovailoa their starter in 2023. He will be reunited with his former Alabama teammate, wide receiver Jameson Crowder.
Tagovailoa's departure from Miami comes as no surprise. The Dolphins have been rumored to be shopping him for months, and they have made no secret of their desire to upgrade at the quarterback position.
The Dolphins are expected to pursue a veteran quarterback in free agency or via trade, with Derek Carr and Jimmy Garoppolo among the potential targets.
