A look back at Patrick Dempsey's journey to becoming 'Sexiest Man Alive'

Patrick Dempsey has been named People magazine's "Sexiest Man Alive" for 2022.

The 56-year-old actor, best known for his role as Dr. Derek "McDreamy" Shepherd on "Grey's Anatomy," was surprised and honored by the designation.

"It's a great honor," Dempsey said. "I'm very flattered."

Dempsey is the oldest man to be named "Sexiest Man Alive" since Sean Connery in 1989.

He joins a long list of Hollywood hunks who have held the title, including Ryan Reynolds, George Clooney, and Brad Pitt.

Dempsey said he doesn't think of himself as a sex symbol, but he's grateful for the recognition.

"I'm just a normal guy," he said. "I'm just a dad and a husband." Dempsey has been married to Jillian Fink since 1999.

They have three children together. Dempsey said he's proud of his family and his career.
