Dominican Republic Airport Steps Up Security After Plane Diverted From Haiti
Passengers and crew forced to hide on floor in chaotic scenes
Punta Cana, Dominican Republic - An Air Century plane was diverted to the Dominican Republic on Sunday after gunfire erupted near the airport in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
The flight, which was carrying 136 passengers and crew, was forced to land in Punta Cana after the pilot reported hearing gunfire near the Toussaint Louverture International Airport. The airport is located in the capital city of Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
According to witnesses, the gunfire began shortly after the plane took off. Passengers and crew were forced to hide on the floor of the plane in chaotic scenes.
“We heard gunshots and the plane started shaking,” one passenger told reporters. “We were all terrified.”
The plane landed safely in Punta Cana, where passengers and crew were evacuated. No injuries were reported.
The Dominican Republic’s aviation authority has since stepped up security at Punta Cana International Airport. Passengers are now being screened more thoroughly and additional security personnel have been deployed.
The incident comes amid a wave of violence in Haiti, which has been plagued by political instability and gang violence in recent months.
The United States Embassy in Haiti has issued a travel advisory, urging Americans to avoid traveling to the country.
The Dominican Republic, on the other hand, remains a popular tourist destination. The country has a relatively low crime rate and is home to some of the Caribbean’s most beautiful beaches.
