Spirit Airlines Cancels Haiti Flights
American carrier drops plans to make Port-au-Prince its 87th destination
Flights from Fort Lauderdale set to start soon.
Spirit Airlines abruptly canceled plans Tuesday to initiate service to Haiti's capital of Port-au-Prince, becoming the latest carrier to abandon the volatile Caribbean nation amid spiking crime, civil unrest and political turmoil.
The decision by the Miramar, Florida-based budget airline came just weeks after Spirit announced it would begin twice-weekly nonstop flights between Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Toussaint Louverture International Airport on June 9.
The airline did not specify why the flights were canceled in a statement to the Miami Herald, saying only that it "routinely evaluates the performance of its routes and makes adjustments as needed."
