Spirit Airlines Flight Diverts After Reports of Gunfire

A Spirit Airlines flight from Fort Lauderdale, Florida to Port-au-Prince, Haiti was diverted to Nassau, Bahamas on Sunday after reports of gunfire on the plane.

The Boeing 737, with 102 passengers and six crew members on board, landed safely at Lynden Pindling International Airport at 4:37 p.m. local time.

According to the Nassau Guardian, a local newspaper, passengers reported hearing gunshots coming from the back of the plane about 30 minutes after takeoff.

The flight crew then made the decision to divert to Nassau.

The Royal Bahamas Police Force is investigating the incident.

Spirit Airlines released a statement saying that it is "aware of the incident involving flight 5263 from Fort Lauderdale to Port-au-Prince."

"The flight diverted to Nassau due to reports of a disturbance on board," the statement said.

"The safety of our guests and crew members is our top priority," the statement continued. "We are cooperating with law enforcement and will provide updates as they become available."
