Spirit Airlines Flight from Florida to Haiti Hit by Gunfire While Attempting to Land, Diverts to Dominican Republic
Passengers Recount Terrifying Ordeal
A Spirit Airlines flight from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, was forced to divert to the Dominican Republic on Sunday after being struck by gunfire while attempting to land.
The plane, carrying 102 passengers and six crew members, was approaching the Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Port-au-Prince when it was hit by multiple rounds of gunfire.
Passengers Feared for Their Lives
Passengers on the flight described a terrifying ordeal, with some saying they heard bullets whizzing past their heads.
"I was sitting by the window and I saw the muzzle flashes," said one passenger, who wished to remain anonymous. "I thought we were all going to die."
Another passenger, who also asked not to be identified, said, "I was holding my child in my arms and I was just praying that we would make it out alive."
Plane Diverts to Dominican Republic
The plane's pilots made the decision to divert to the Las Américas International Airport in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, where it landed safely.
All passengers and crew members were evacuated from the plane and no injuries were reported.
Investigation Underway
Authorities in Haiti are investigating the incident and have not yet determined who was responsible for the gunfire.
Spirit Airlines has released a statement saying that they are cooperating with the investigation and are providing support to their passengers.
