Spurs Waive Stephon Castle to Make Room for Gorgui Dieng
San Antonio Moves to Bolster Frontcourt Depth
Dieng, a veteran center, brings experience and versatility to Spurs roster
The San Antonio Spurs have waived forward Stephon Castle in order to make room for veteran center Gorgui Dieng, the team announced Monday. The move comes as the Spurs look to bolster their frontcourt depth ahead of the upcoming season.
Dieng, 31, is a 6-foot-10 center who has played 11 seasons in the NBA. He has averaged 7.0 points and 6.5 rebounds per game over his career, and has been a valuable contributor for several teams, including the Minnesota Timberwolves, Memphis Grizzlies, and Atlanta Hawks.
Castle, 26, has played three seasons in the NBA, including two with the Spurs. He averaged 4.3 points and 2.7 rebounds per game in 2022-23, but fell out of the rotation late in the season.
The Spurs are hoping that Dieng can provide them with a reliable backup to starting center Jakob Poeltl. Dieng is a strong rebounder and defender, and he can also stretch the floor with his shooting. He is also a veteran presence who can help mentor the Spurs' young players.
The Spurs have been active in the offseason, adding several new players to their roster. They signed free agent forward Jeremy Sochan and traded for forward Doug McDermott. They also drafted guard Blake Wesley in the first round of the 2022 NBA Draft.
The Spurs are hoping that the addition of Dieng will help them compete for a playoff spot in the Western Conference. They finished 34-48 last season, but they are optimistic that they can improve with a healthy Dejounte Murray and a more experienced roster.
