US flight to Haiti diverted after being shot at on approach to Port-au-Prince

American Airlines flight 331 turned back to Miami after being fired upon while descending

No injuries were reported among the 150 people on board

American Airlines flight 331 from Miami to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, was forced to turn back to Miami on Tuesday after being shot at while on approach to the Haitian capital.

The Airbus A319, carrying 150 passengers and crew, was about 10 miles from Port-au-Prince's Toussaint Louverture International Airport when it was struck by gunfire.

The plane was hit at least twice, according to American Airlines, but there were no injuries.

The flight crew reported seeing muzzle flashes from the ground, and the plane was able to climb away from the gunfire and return to Miami.

American Airlines said in a statement that it is "deeply concerned" about the incident and is working with authorities to investigate.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a notice to air missions (NOTAM) warning other pilots of the incident.

The US State Department has also issued a travel advisory for Haiti, warning US citizens to avoid traveling to the country due to the ongoing violence.
