MADISON, Wis. -- Tom Burman, the Director of Athletics for the University of Wisconsin, penned a moving letter to the university’s student-athletes and staff about the recent events surrounding racism and social injustice.
In the letter, Burman expresses his outrage over the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery. He also acknowledges the pain and anger that many people are feeling in the wake of these events.
“I am heartbroken and disgusted by the senseless deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery,” Burman writes. “These were innocent people who were killed simply because of the color of their skin. This is unacceptable.”
Burman goes on to say that he is committed to fighting against racism and social injustice. He says that he will use his platform as Director of Athletics to speak out against these issues and to work for change.
“I am committed to using my platform as Director of Athletics to speak out against racism and social injustice,” Burman writes. “I will not be silent in the face of hatred and bigotry.”
Burman’s letter has been praised by many people, including UW Chancellor Rebecca Blank. In a statement, Blank said that she is proud of Burman’s leadership and his commitment to fighting against racism.
“Tom Burman is a true leader,” Blank said. “He is not afraid to speak out against injustice, and he is committed to making a difference in the world. I am proud to have him as the Director of Athletics at the University of Wisconsin.”
Burman’s letter is a powerful reminder that we must all stand up against racism and social injustice. We must all work together to create a more just and equitable world.
