Why Rutgers basketball’s tight win over Saint Peter’s could pay dividends later in season
New Jersey rivals face off in a low-scoring defensive battle
Rutgers picked up a 56-52 victory against Saint Peter’s in the RAC on Wednesday night. The physical game was a defensive battle, with both teams struggling to find a rhythm offensively.
Rutgers leaned on their defense
Rutgers held Saint Peter’s to just 33.3% shooting from the field and forced 15 turnovers. The Scarlet Knights also blocked seven shots, led by Mawot Mag’s three blocks.
Mag was a force on the defensive end
Mag also added 12 points and six rebounds for Rutgers. The 6-foot-9 junior is one of the most versatile defenders in the Big Ten, and he can guard all five positions on the floor. His ability to protect the rim and defend on the perimeter makes him a valuable asset for the Scarlet Knights.
Clifford led Rutgers in scoring
Caleb Clifford led Rutgers in scoring with 15 points. The senior guard hit three 3-pointers and was 5-of-13 from the field. Clifford is averaging 13.8 points per game this season and is one of the most experienced players on the team.
Saint Peter’s made things tough
Saint Peter’s entered the game with a 4-6 record but made things tough for Rutgers. The Peacocks led by six points in the first half and were within three points with less than two minutes remaining in the game.
Jackson led the way for Saint Peter’s
Doug Edert led Saint Peter’s with 14 points, while Matthew Lee added 11 points. The Peacocks are a young team with a lot of potential, and they should be a tough opponent for most teams in the MAAC this season.
What’s next for Rutgers?
Rutgers will host Lafayette on Saturday before opening Big Ten play at home against Michigan on Dec. 6. The Scarlet Knights will need to continue to play tough defense and find more consistency on offense if they want to be successful in the Big Ten this season.
