Chu welcomed his second child, a baby girl, on Sunday
The director was scheduled to attend the premiere of his new film in New York City, but had to cancel at the last minute
Jon M. Chu, the director of the upcoming film "Wicked," missed the premiere of his new film in New York City on Tuesday night because his wife gave birth to their second child, a baby girl, on Sunday.
Chu announced the news on Instagram, writing, "I'm so sorry to miss the premiere of 'Wicked' tonight. My wife and I welcomed our beautiful baby girl into the world on Sunday, and I'm here with her now."
Chu said he was "heartbroken" to miss the premiere, but that he was "so grateful" for the support of his cast and crew.
"I know they're going to put on an amazing show, and I can't wait to see it myself," he wrote.
Chu's absence from the premiere was a major disappointment for fans of the film, but many took to social media to congratulate him on the birth of his child.
"Congratulations to Jon and his wife on the birth of their new baby!" one fan wrote. "I'm so sorry you had to miss the premiere, but I'm sure it was a special night for you and your family."
"I'm sure the premiere was amazing, but I'm also sure that being there for the birth of your child was even more special," another fan wrote.
Chu's new film, "Wicked," is a musical adaptation of the popular Broadway show of the same name. The film stars Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, and Ariana Grande as Glinda, the Good Witch of the North.
The film is scheduled to be released in theaters on November 27, 2024.
