World War II Veteran Looks Back on His Life
A Conversation with a Living Legend
At 98 years old, World War II veteran John Smith has seen more than most of us could ever imagine. He was just 18 years old when he was drafted into the Army and sent to fight in Europe. He served in the Battle of the Bulge, one of the largest and bloodiest battles of the war. John was wounded in action and received a Purple Heart. After the war, he returned home and went on to live a long and full life. He married, had children, and grandchildren, and he worked as a successful businessman.
Recently, I had the privilege of sitting down with John and talking to him about his life and experiences. He is a remarkable man with a wealth of knowledge and wisdom to share. I was honored to hear his story, and I am grateful for the opportunity to share it with you.
John's Early Life
John was born in a small town in Iowa in 1924. He was the youngest of five children. His father was a farmer, and his mother was a schoolteacher. John grew up in a loving and supportive home. He was a good student and enjoyed playing sports.
After graduating from high school, John attended college for two years. However, when the war broke out, he decided to leave school and join the Army. He was eager to serve his country and fight for freedom.
John's Military Service
John was sent to Europe in 1944. He served in the 101st Airborne Division, which was one of the most elite units in the Army. John fought in several major battles, including the Battle of the Bulge. He was wounded in action and received a Purple Heart.
