Zhuhai: 35 Killed After Car Ploughs into Crowd in China
At Least 13 More Injured in 'Intentional' Attack, Police Say
Driver Detained as Authorities Investigate Motive
At least 35 people were killed and another 13 injured when a car ploughed into a crowd in the southern Chinese city of Zhuhai on Tuesday, according to local police.
The incident happened at around 5:30 p.m. local time in front of a shopping mall in the city's Xiangzhou district. The driver of the car, a 22-year-old man surnamed Liu, has been detained by police, who are investigating the motive behind the attack.
Witnesses said the car swerved onto the sidewalk and hit a group of people who were waiting to cross the street. The car then continued driving for about 100 meters before crashing into a bus stop, where it caught fire.
The injured were taken to local hospitals, where some are reported to be in critical condition. President Xi Jinping has ordered an investigation into the incident, and the Ministry of Public Security has sent a team of investigators to Zhuhai.
The incident is the deadliest in China since 2013, when a car ploughed into a crowd in Beijing's Tiananmen Square, killing five people.
