Gautam Gambhir's Razor-Sharp Reply to Critics Over Backing KL Rahul Despite Slump: 'How Many Countries Have Players...?'
The Former Indian Opener Defends his Support for the Struggling Batter
Gambhir's unwavering support for Rahul has drawn criticism from some quarters, but the former opener has hit back, questioning the critics' understanding of the game.
Gautam Gambhir, the former Indian opener, has launched a staunch defense of KL Rahul, who has come under fire for his recent poor form.
Rahul, who is India's vice-captain in Tests, has struggled for runs in recent months, averaging just 17.40 in his last 10 Test innings.
Despite Rahul's struggles, Gambhir has remained a staunch supporter of the batter, arguing that he is a class act and will come good soon.
"I don't understand why there is so much criticism of KL Rahul," Gambhir said. "He is a quality player and he has proven himself at the international level."
"How many countries have players who can open the batting and keep wickets?" Gambhir asked. "KL Rahul is one of those rare players."
Gambhir also pointed out that Rahul has been a consistent performer for India in the past, averaging over 40 in Tests and ODIs.
"He has had a few bad innings lately, but that doesn't mean he is a bad player," Gambhir said. "He is a quality player and he will come good soon."
Gambhir's comments come after Rahul was dropped from India's playing XI for the first Test against Australia in Nagpur.
However, Gambhir believes that Rahul will be back in the team soon and will play a key role in India's bid to win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
"I have no doubt that KL Rahul will come good soon," Gambhir said. "He is a quality player and he has the backing of the team management."
