Veterans Voices: Journey from the NFL to serving in Iraq
Former NFL players share their experiences of transitioning from the gridiron to the battlefield
For many, the NFL is the ultimate dream. But for some, the gridiron is just a stepping stone to a higher calling. That's the case for several former NFL players who have traded in their cleats for military fatigues.
These veterans have served their country with distinction, both on and off the battlefield. They've faced challenges and overcome adversity, but they've also found a new sense of purpose and fulfillment.
Here are their stories:
David Grayson
David Grayson was a star running back for the Denver Broncos in the 1990s. He rushed for over 1,000 yards in three consecutive seasons and was named to the Pro Bowl twice.
But after his football career ended, Grayson felt like something was missing. He decided to join the Army, and he served in Iraq for two tours of duty.
Grayson said that his experience in the military helped him to grow as a person. He learned the importance of teamwork, discipline, and sacrifice.
Brandon Marshall
Brandon Marshall was a standout wide receiver for the Denver Broncos and New York Giants. He was one of the most feared pass-catchers in the NFL, and he was named to the Pro Bowl five times.
But Marshall's life took a turn after he was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. He decided to retire from football and focus on his mental health.
Marshall eventually joined the Army National Guard, and he served in Iraq for one tour of duty. He said that his experience in the military helped him to find his purpose in life.
Chad Brown
Chad Brown was a standout offensive lineman for the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Jets. He was a key member of the Steelers' Super Bowl XL championship team.
After his football career ended, Brown decided to join the Army. He served in Iraq for one tour of duty, and he was awarded the Bronze Star for his actions in combat.
Brown said that his experience in the military was the most rewarding of his life. He said that he learned the importance of giving back to his country and community.
